The January 2025 Richmond Water Crisis: What Happened and Why it Still Matters

From January 6th to January 11th, 2025, Residents of the City of Richmond and its surrounding counties (barring Chesterfield) were subject to a boil water advisory due to multiple equipment failures at the Richmond water plant [1]. While a blizzard that occurred a day earlier was cited as the cause, the crisis eventually unveiled several key issues that ended in a private investigation into the true roots of the crisis. It also caused the allocation of millions of dollars into Richmond and its surrounding areas’ water infrastructure. Today, infrastructure is still being repaired and improved, with plans created for up to ten years in the future. [2]

This website serves as a quick guide and rundown of both the events that transpired in January and future planning for Richmond’s infrastructure. I recommend getting started with the timeline to begin navigating this website.
